I'm new to DI recording and using guitar amp sims. I want to be able to record my guitar with an amp sim engaged so I can listen to the processed guitar but I'm getting quite a bit of latency when I activate monitoring. Even after changing the setting on my audio interface to a ASIO buffer size of 1.0 ms I'm still getting bad latency. So maybe it's the settings on Reaper? If anyone can help it'd be greatly appreciated.
If you want to listen to the result of FX processing, this has little to do with "monitoring recording" but more with "live playing". (you can do this easily without starting a recording.) I am using Reaper for live playing all the time and it works great. But to do this you need appropriate hardware: a decent processor, enough RAM, and - first of all - an analog interface that is specified for low latency (I am happily using a Native Instruments Audio 6, that the VST effect company designed with that purpose in mind). This given, the audio interface can be set to a rather low input and output latency (aka "buffer size/count"). -Michael
I may be way off, but i suspect it has something to do with your drivers. What drivers are you using? Take a look at this post on Native Instruments for more information that might be of help to you.

You can try this, it can make a little difference: Track one, record : only DI guitar with no amp sims or effects Make a send to a new track (two) Track two, with your amp sim, no recording, just activate monitoring. And you can test your amp sim later, without playing the guitar.
One probable cause is some of the plugins you might use. If plugin itself has latency, you can't avoid it. Some FX like convolution reverbs etc. may have quite a big latency. Also keep in mind that if your track that you are monitoring is sending signal to AUX track that has plugin with latency, it is also added. If you get no noticeable latency without any plugins, then some plugin will be the culprit.

Interesting I didn't know about that. I actually did have Reaverb opened on that track too so I'll try checking those boxes like you said and see how that works. Thanks
