Hi, I was wondering if it would be possible to author an encrypted HD-DVD? Why would you want to do that you might ask! Well if we could create a valid HD-DVD disc that was accepted as encrypted by a drive and the player then: Why not insert our own list of revoked drives and players? If the list we inserted was blank but had a very high version number then according to the standard it would override all other revokation lists. Now I know this does not directly help with the decryption of future disks but it would prevent our a comprimised player and/or drive from being disabled from playing existing disks. Do people think this is a good idea and can it be done? In particular is it possible to write the Volume ID yourself? Cheers. Tref.

I believe you can do it with Sonic Scenarist 4.1.

No, you cant create a valid encrypted HD-DVD. You need AACS LAs private key to create the correct signature.

You cannot create a encrypted disc without a signature from AACS LA (they have the private key). I'm pretty sire it is possible to create a decrypted disc with all possible features (thats basicly how discs using AnyDVD look like for a software player). This is what we want: burned decrypted and fully working discs. It may be possible to create a encrypted copy (rewritable) of an already encrypted disc by changing/re-encrypting the title keys (in the TKF) only: this part is not signed by AACS and thus chaneable to our needs. But I'm not sure if thats what you want. (We sort of discussed this in the Processing Key thread...) But you cannot change the MKB so revocations are still there. This method might be useful for consoles that do not accept non-encrypted discs for playback.

Thanks for the replies. Can a standard DVD writer write the Volume ID?

HD DVD players operate in one of two modes depending on the disc they are running: Fulltrust and restricted modes. The mode is selected at player start and does not change. After all the hand waving is done, Fulltrust == AACS, restricted is what you get otherwise. Some of the restrictions are for good reasons, networks are disabled to prevent your HD DVD player from becoming some ones zombie, no persistent memory access is permitted to avoid malicious wearing out of the flash memory (most flash is spec'ed for only a million writes, or so). Others seem intended to keep you from having too much fun (like font specifications). Of course, a well enhanced VLC would probably ignore these restrictions.
