can anyone tell me if it a legal requirement for my volvo s70 to have rear seat belts fitted when the seats have been remove and replaced with a dog carrying cannin which it built into the rear? my mot is due next week and i would be without a car if it is to fail on that, because the seats, belts etc have all been removed. there is no way anyone can fit into the reat, there is just enough space for my dog. cheers in advance.
No seat = no seat belt. I had problems with this in my old 480. It's a 4 seater and the rear seats fold down catching the rear seat belt making them slow to retract. It failed it's MOT on the rear seat belts so I removed the rear seats (30 seconds as they are clip in) and instantly put it in for retest. Examiner wasn't happy but eventually did pass it as a 2 seater.
thats similar what i did with my old 850. it had a chip/crack in the window, so i put smaller wiper blades in, making the chip no longer in the line of vision, it passed !! seems alot of silly red tape isnt it. another time, fit quick failed my other 850 cos one of the headlight bulbs wasnt fitted correctly....i would of given them a tenna if they corrected it and passed it, but no, rules apply...instead they failed it, i had to retrun when fitted correctly. why so many places dont bother using common sense anymore...nothing but inconvenience.
my car passed mot a couple of days ago, but got an advisory note for having no rear seats or belts? is this expected?? will they expect rear seats and belts fitted for the next mot? help!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, Depending on year, if you have a rear seat, the seat must have a belt. But..... If you have removed the seat (completely) then there is no obvious need to a belt. And as far as I have read (here) if the seat isn't there then you don't need the belt. Obviously the tester was miffed that the seats were absent, along with the belts as the car was designed to have seats, and belts... Having an advisory doesn't mean they will be looking extra hard at the previous years test for things to look for... Des. . . ;)
My last car, a Skoda Felicia had removable seats and every time it went for an MOT with them removed the examiner never checked the rear seat belts as part of the test...because no rear seats means no need to test the seat belts. He did however say that if I put the seats back in then the MOT would be effectively invalid as it passed as a two seater estate! I never had my seats in the back as I used the car for work and needed the space inside as big as possible.
